NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame defender Greg Klazura (Rockford, Ill.) heard his named called in Tuesday’s 2012 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft. The Vancouver Whitecaps selected Klazura with the second pick in the second round (21st overall selection).
Klazura, an Irish team captain, started every match at left back this past season and ranked third among all Notre Dame players with a career-high three assists. He played in 44 career games, including 39 starts, and totaled six points on one goal and four assists.
Last month, Klazura was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-region scholar for the second straight season. Klazura also has earned multiple selections to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team during his Irish career.
During this past season, Klazura was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 26 along with being selected to the Soccer America national team of the week after helping the Irish defense blank No. 3 Louisville in a 1-0 victory. He also was a 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award finalist.
Tuesday’s draft consisted of four rounds and 76 total picks.
Notre Dame’s Aaron Maund and Brendan King were selected in Thursday’s 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Maund, a central defender, was picked by Toronto FC in the first round (12th overall pick), while King, a midfielder, went to the Portland Timbers in the second round (27th overall).
Notre Dame has had 19 MLS SuperDraft selections and two supplemental picks during the 11-year tenure of head coach Bobby Clark.
