NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Former University of Notre Dame outfielder Allen Greene was named Auburn University Director of Athletics, the school announced on Thursday (Jan. 18).

Greene, who previously served as the athletic director at the University at Buffalo for two years, also worked in compliance at Notre Dame and Mississippi. Greene is one of several Notre Dame graduates to serve as Director of Athletics at a Division I institution.

Greene and Bobinski represent the Irish baseball team, while Smith played football, and Wilcox and White both played basketball at Notre Dame.

A finance major at Notre Dame, Greene graduated in 1999 and went on to receive a master’s degree in liberal studies from Indiana in 2009. Greene was a three-year starter in the outfield with the Irish baseball program before signing with the New York Yankees organization after his junior season as a ninth-round Major League Draft selection.

Greene played in New York’s farm system from June of 1998 to March of 2001. Greene’s three seasons with the Irish (1996-98) included a .329 career batting average, 15 home runs, 113 RBI, 44 doubles, 61 walks and 22 stolen bases in 150 games played.

A native of Seattle, Washington, Greene hit six of his seven home runs in 1997 while batting left-handed. The next season, five of his seven home runs came from the right side of the plate. His 20 doubles in 1997 still rank 10th on the Notre Dame single-season list, while his other highlights that season included a five-hit game (tying the then-Irish record) and two home runs in the same inning of another game.

Greene and his teammates helped the Irish offense set the record for most home runs (66) in 1997 and again with 73 in 1998. The outfielder’s .365 season batting average was a leading force on the 1997 squad that set the still-standing Irish record for team batting (.334).

Greene was part of an Irish program that won 70 percent of its games from 1996-98 (126-54), with the 1996 team advancing to the NCAA Tournament while the 1997 squad won the BIG EAST Conference regular-season title.
