DINGWALL, Scotland – The Notre Dame men’s soccer team improved to 3-0 on its exhibition tour of Scotland, with Thursday’s 1-0 win in Dingwall over the Ross County under-21 squad. The Irish goal came 10 minutes into the second half, when rising junior midfielder Filippo Chillemi cut a leftside corner kick into the goal area. Sophomore-to-be defender Kevin Goldthwaite was in position to head the ball into the net for the game’s only scoring.

With three minutes late, a questionable foul call resulted in a penalty kick for Ross County – but rising senior Greg Tait guessed correctly with a dive to his right and saved the waist-high shot to preserve the win.

Notre Dame used the same lineup as in the earlier wins over Formartine United and Banks of Dee (8-1), with rising junior midfielder Justin Detter playing the entire second half as he works his way back from injury.

The Irish have three days off from competition before next playing versus the Aberdeen FC under-21s (Mon., Aug. 12; 1:00 p.m./7:00 a.m. in South Bend). The team’s final game of the tour will be vs. Dundee United on Wednesday, Aug. 14 (1:00 p.m./7:00 a.m. SB).

NOTRE DAME HEAD COACH BOBBY CLARK: “This game was a bit of a battle, against a young team of full-time professionals. They were very fit and well-organized but we controlled the game by and large. It was a nice three-and-a-half hour drive from Aberdeen to Dingwall. We drove through Inverness and the game was a played in a nice little stadium. It was an enjoyable experience for the team. We again spent 20 minutes in the cold waters of the North Sea to refresh the players’ legs. Now we have a little bit of a break and the guys are going to do some golfing and shopping with a day off. We then are going to regroup and practice on Saturday before getting tickets to attend the Celtic-Aberdeen game. This game was versus a First Division team but our final two games will be very hard, versus the top-level (Premier League) teams. The competition basically is building and we will see if we can match that level of play in each game.”
