Notre Dame, Ind. – Freshman Mike Walsh (Northville, Mich.) scored the winning goal at 9:04 of the second period and the Gold team’s defense held off a late Blue rally as the Gold team took a 5-4 win over the Blue in Notre Dame’s annual Blue-Gold Intrasquad Scrimmage. The game, played to benefit the Coaches’ Foundation for cancer research, drew over 1,000 fans to the Joyce Center. Each Notre Dame player played the game in honor of a family member or friend stricken with cancer.
Walsh was joined by teammate Alex Lalonde (So., Newmarket, Ont.) as the scoring leaders in the game with a goal and an assist.
The Blue squad jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Michael Chin (Sr., Urbana, Ill.) beat goaltender Morgan Cey (So., Wilkie, Sask.) at 4:33 of the first half (game was played in two 20-minute halves). The Gold team came back to take a 3-1 lead as Tim Wallace (Fr., Anchorage, Ak.) tied the game at 6:21 before Evan Nielsen (Sr., Evanston, Ill.) and Brett Lebda (Jr., Buffalo Grove, Ill.) scored on penalty shots. (All penalties called in the game resulted in a penalty shot).
Freshman Tony Gill (Rochester, Minn.) cut the Gold lead to 3-2 at 16:12 before Lalonde scored off a Mike Walsh setup at 18:44 for a 4-2 Blue lead.
Walsh built the lead to 5-2 for the first goal of the second half before Tom Galvin (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) scored on a penalty shot and Connor Dunlop (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) got an unassisted goal for the 5-4 final score.
The Blue team outshot the Gold, 29-25, in the game. Morgan Cey and Rory Walsh (Fr., Milton, Mass.) combined for 25 saves for the Gold. Tony Zasowski (Sr., Darien, Ill.) and Rory Walsh combined for 20 saves for the Blue team.
Notre Dame plays host to the University of Toronto on Friday, Oct. 4 in a preseason game at the Joyce Center. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The Irish open the regular season on Oct. 11-12 when they travel to Duluth, Minn., to face the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in a weekend series.
