NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fresh off a pair of individual victories and a relay win at the Notre Dame Invitational, University of Notre Dame men’s track and field standout Chris Giesting has been named BIG EAST Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Giesting, who was named Most Outstanding Track Performer of the 2012 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, won the 200 and 500m dashes and ran a leg of the winning 4x400m relay team Saturday as the Irish men finished second at the four-team meet at the Loftus Sports Center.

The Batesville, Ind., native won the 200m dash in 21.69, the 500m dash in 1:03.17 and ran the second leg of the 4x400m relay team that won in 3:12.68.

Giesting is ranked 21st nationally in the 400m dash (47.64), while the 4x400m relay team (3:12.68) is 15th. In the BIG EAST the sophomore is ranked first in the 200m (21.69) and 500m (1:03.17) and second in the 400m (47.64).

The honor is the second of Giesting’s career, as he opened his career with similar honors after an impressive showing at last year’s Blue & Gold Invitational.

Notre Dame returns to action this weekend as it travels to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Relays that are slated for Friday and Saturday.
