The Performance Team: Combining Notre Dame’s Resources to Make Irish Athletes Bigger, Faster, Stronger

The Business of Notre Dame Athletics–Fourth of a six-part series

Mike Karwoski is in his 20th year as a member of the University of Notre Dame athletics administration. In July, 2009, Karwoski assumed a new role in the athletics department focusing on the development and implementation of a comprehensive Sport/Athlete Performance Program for Notre Dame student-athletes. The Sport/ Athlete Performance Program has direct oversight for the areas of sports medicine, athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports nutrition and equipment. With the creation of a “Performance Team” comprised of the unit leaders/directors of these areas, the Sport/ Athlete Performance Program has been working with coaches, staff and student-athletes to find new and innovative ways to enhance our varsity athletic teams’ overall performance. In conjunction with his Sport/Athlete Performance Program responsibilities, Karwoski serves as the sport administrator for men’s golf and cheerleading.

Prior to assuming his current post, Karwoski worked for 17 years in the area of NCAA rules compliance and served for five years as the Associate Athletics Director with direct oversight for the department’s Compliance and Student-Athlete Welfare and Development units. As part of his Compliance responsibilities, he served as the department’s primary liaison to the NCAA and the Big East Conference as well as with the University Offices of the General Counsel, Faculty Board on Athletics, Undergraduate Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid, Academic Services for Student-Athletes and the Alumni Association.

In the area of Student-Athlete Welfare and Development, Karwoski worked closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), First Year of Studies, Student Affairs, Residence Life, Undergraduate Admissions and special/talented student-athletes. He also oversaw student-athlete off-campus housing and conduct/disciplinary matters.

Additionally, Karwoski has had sport administrator responsibilities for women’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s cross country/indoor track/outdoor track, cheerleading and men’s golf. He has served on various Big East Conference sports committees over the years and was also the tournament director for the 2005 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional Championships held at the Warren Golf Course and the First/Second Rounds of the 2009 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championships held at the Joyce Center.

Following his graduation from Central Connecticut State University in 1990 with a degree in Political Science, Karwoski worked as a committee clerk and legislative aide in the Connecticut General Assembly assisting with legislative policy for the Education and Public Health Subcommittees. During his undergraduate years at CCSU, he was a member of the baseball and soccer teams. During the 1991-92 academic year, Karwoski was an athletics administrative assistant and graduate assistant soccer coach at Springfield (MA) College, while earning a Master’s of Education Degree with a concentration in sports management.

A native of Farmington, Conn., Karwoski is married to the former Ann Niemier, a senior staff assistant in the Athletics Business Office.
