Sept. 24, 2001
Notre Dame, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) has initiated a concept for the 2001-02 school year called the “Gold Games” which has been created to increase support within the community for each of Notre Dame’s 26 varsity sports.
Members of SAAC will target one athletic contest as a “Gold Game” for each varsity sport throughout the school year with hopes of increasing attendance among Irish student-athletes and Notre Dame students, faculty and staff. The first “Gold Game” will be Notre Dame’s women’s soccer matchup with Nebraska on Tues., Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m. on Alumni Field.
The SAAC is comprised of a student-athlete from each varsity team at Notre Dame as well as a representative from the student manager’s program.
“We (the SAAC) initiated the concept of the “Gold Game” to help increase attendance at athletic events here on campus,” says Kathryn Lam, SAAC president and captain of the women’s lacrosse team. “We’re hoping to generate more support from the student-athletes as well as from the general student body, faculty and staff. Our goal is to create an exciting playing environment for our teams through the promotion of these games. We want to create an atmosphere in which people want to come back again to watch our teams play.”
