Bernadette Cafarelli And Lisa Mushett Promoted In Sports Information Office
Duo assumes new titles in sports information office.

Bernadette Cafarelli has been named sports information director at the University of Notre Dame, and Lisa Mushett has been promoted to associate sports information director.

Associate athletic director John Heisler, who has served as sports information director since 1988, continues to oversee the areas of media relations, broadcast properties, scheduling and technology for the athletic department.

Cafarelli, a 1983 graduate of Notre Dame, is in her ninth year as a member of the sports information office. She began as an assistant sports information director and was promoted to associate sports information director in 1999. She joined the staff in September 1994 following seven years as assistant director of marketing, promotions and media relations at Providence College.

Cafarelli oversees media relations and production of publicity material for all Notre Dame Olympic sport teams, and works specifically with the men’s basketball and cross country programs.

She has been a member of the Academic All-America Committee for 14 years and currently is a vice-chairman of that committee. Cafarelli received the Lester Jordan Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America in 2000 for outstanding contributions to the Academic All-America program.

Prior to her position at Providence, Cafarelli spent three years as assistant sports information director at William and Mary.

The Schenectady, N.Y., native graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in American studies. She served for two years as a student assistant in the sports information office. Following graduation, Cafarelli attended Ohio University where she received her master’s in sports administration in November 1984.

Mushett is in her sixth year as a member of the Notre Dame sports information department. After serving as publications coordinator for two years, her role with the department expanded in 2000 when she began working with the Notre Dame football and rowing teams.

Mushett joined the Notre Dame staff in September 1998, after serving as sports information director for the women’s athletic department at the University of Minnesota since June 1996. Prior to her appointment as sports information director at Minnesota, she served as assistant SID for the Gophers from 1994-96. She was a graduate assistant in the Illinois sports information office from August 1992 through June 1994.

Mushett’s publications and feature stories have garnered more than 30 awards, including 11 “Best In the Nation” Awards. She also serves as vice chair of the job seekers committee for the organization, which helps place young professionals looking to enter the sports information industry.

A native of Keller, Texas, Mushettt has worked a number of special events during her career. She was the media coordinator for the 2000 and 2001 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship first- and second-round games held at Notre Dame, as well as the the 2001 and 2002 NCAA South Bend Baseball Regional. She also was the media coordinator of the 1997 Big Ten women’s soccer and gymnastics championships and was an assistant media coordinator at the 1995 NCAA Women’s Final Four.

A 1992 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with bachelor’s degrees in journalism and speech communication and a minor in business administration, Mushett earned her master’s of science from Illinois in 1994. She is married to Andrew Mushett, a ’00 Notre Dame graduate.
