Sports Information staff earns eight top finishes.

July 12, 2001

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The University of Notre Dame was recently honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for publications produced during the 2000-01 academic year. The school earned 13 Citations of Excellence in the CoSIDA Publications Contests, including eight “Best in the Nation” awards. Awards were presented at the annual CoSIDA Convention, July 1-4, in San Diego.

At the convention, 555 citations (357 National and 198 District) were presented to 133 institutions and conferences in 74 contests. The contests ranged from single sport brochures (media guides, etc.) and programs to special publications and programs to conference publications. Most contests, with the exception of football, were divided into four divisions. Division A included Division I schools, Division B included NCAA II and NAIA I schools, while Division C included NCAA III, NAIA II, NCCAA and junior colleges. In football, there was a separate division for NCAA IAA schools.

In total, there were nearly 1,800 entries received from schools and conferences across the country in all categories. The number of awards varies from category to category, depending on the number of entries. However, there are no more than seven place winners in each division. There is also a “Best Cover” category in each category.

Schools honored with the most citations included the University of Texas with 20, followed by the University of Notre Dame (13 citations), the University of Nebraska (12 citations), the University of Tennessee (12 citations) and Washburn University (10 citations). The University of Notre Dame and the University of Tennessee each earned eight “Best in the Nation” awards, while Johnson County Community College (Overland Park, KS) and Washburn University each garnered five “Best in the Nation” Awards.

CoSIDA is an organization that was established in 1955 to serve Sports Information Directors and others associated with the promotion of college athletics. It currently numbers over 1,800 members.
