NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Former University of Notre Dame All-American, coach and longtime athletic director Edward “Moose” Krause will be memorialized this fall with construction of a sculpture of the Irish legend.

The bronze sculpture will have Krause seated on a bench in front of the Joyce Center, looking west toward Notre Dame Stadium. Jerry McKenna, who did the Frank Leahy sculpture that was dedicated in September of ’97 and now stands just east of the Stadium, also will do the Krause figure.

Heading up the Krause statue committee are University executive vice president emeritus Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., former Irish football coach Ara Parseghian and current Irish assistant athletic director George Kelly.

Contributions to the Moose Krause Memorial Fund are tax deductible, will be acknowledged through the University of Notre Dame Development Office — and can be sent to Moose Krause Memorial Fund, c/o George Kelly, 113 Joyce Center, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

Born February 2, 1913 in Chicago, Ill., Krause was a standout athlete at DeLaSalle High School, won three monograms at Notre Dame as a football tackle from 1931-33. He also earned a monogram in track — and won consensus All-America honors three seasons in a row in basketball (only the second player ever to accomplish that, following Purdue’s John Wooden). He started at center, led the team in scoring three straight seasons and was captain of the Irish team as a senior in ’33-’34. Krause helped the Irish to records of 18-2, 16-6 and 20-4.

He spent six seasons as head basketball coach at Notre Dame (1943-44, then 1946-47 through 1950-51) — then served as athletic director for 32 seasons from 1948-80. He was a 1976 inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Krause died on December 11, 1992. Moose Krause Stadium, home to Irish track and lacrosse competition and located just east of the Joyce Center, is named in his honor, as is Moose Krause Drive which runs just north of Notre Dame Stadium.
