University of Notre Dame director of athletics Kevin White earned a spot on Sporting News’ Power 100, its annual ranking of “sports industry heavyweights,” in the publication’s Jan. 12, 2004, issue.

White ranked third among five names listed in the “Front Office” category (joining Billy Beane of the Oakland A’s, Theo Epstein of the Boston Red Sox, Rich McKay of the Atlanta Falcons and Larry Bird of the Indiana Pacers), with the comment, “He faces serious external pressure to bring Irish football to a conference but has stood up for independence – for now – with NBC’s help, of course.”

White ranked as the only collegiate athletics director among the 100 individuals listed.

Last August, White rated third by Sports Illustrated.com in its listing of the 20 most powerful people in college football (Irish coach Tyrone Willingham stood 19th in that poll).
