TALLAHASSEE, Fla. β The No. 9 ranked Notre Dame football team (1-0) outlasted the Florida State Seminoles (0-1), 41-38, in overtime Sunday night at Doak Campbell Stadium. Jonathan Doerer hit a 41-yard field goal to clinch the game in the first overtime after Florida State missed their field goal attempt.Β
Quarterback Jack Coan had a historic first start for the Irish, setting program records for passing yards (366) and tying the program record for touchdowns (4) in a season-opening game.
Coan spread the ball around, as Michael Mayer, Joe Wilkins, Jr., Kevin Austin, Jr., and Kyren Williams each hauled in a touchdown catch. Chris Tyree also found the endzone on a rushing touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball Isaiah Foskey had a big game, recording career highs in tackles (8), tackles for loss (2.0) and sacks (2.0). JD Bertrand led the defense with a career high 11 tackles in his first career start.
The secondary forced three interceptions, with Kyle Hamilton picking off two passes and Clarence Lewis recording the first interception of his career.
The Irish wasted no time opening the scoring for the 2021 season, driving 75 yards in the first 2:14 to take an early 7-0 lead. Mayer was Coanβs main target on the first drive, hauling in two catches for 66 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown catch.
The Seminoles managed to score 14 straight to take a 14-7 lead off an 89-yard touchdown run from Jashaun Corbin late in the first quarter and a two-yard touchdown run from Jordan Travis with 10:05 left in the second quarter.
Notre Dame responded by scoring the final 10 points of the half to retake the lead at 14-7 heading into the halftime break. Jonathan Doerer connected on a 48-yard field goal to cut the Seminolesβ lead to 14-10.
On Florida Stateβs ensuing possession, Hamilton picked off Travis at the Seminole 48-yard line to give the Irish great field possession. Notre Dame turned the takeaway into seven points off an impressive 23-yard catch from Wilkins to put the Irish on top 17-14 at the half.
The hosts temporarily went back on top with an early score in the third quarter at 20-17 before the Irish imposed their will for the remainder of the quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points to go on top 38-20.
A beautiful 37-yard pass from Coan to Austin marked the first touchdown of the second half. The next two Notre Dame scores were set up by interceptions from Hamilton and Lewis, giving the Irish great field position. Coan found Williams in the flat for a six-yard touchdown followed by Chris Tyree finding paydirt from a yard out.
The Seminoles responded with 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to level the game up with just 40 seconds to play. In overtime, Florida State missed a 37-yard field goal on the first drive off overtime. The Irish responded with the 41-yarder from Doerer to win it.
Up next, the Irish will return home for their home opener against Toledo at 2:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on Peacock.
