NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After topping 300 points on the 1-meter for the first time in her career and placing in the top two in both diving disciplines that helped spur her team to a dual victory over Illinois last Friday night, University of Notre Dame women’s diving standout Emma Gaboury has earned Atlantic Coast Conference Female Diver of the Week accolades, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Making up one-third of a powerful Irish diving trio along with senior Allison Casareto and fellow junior Lindsey Streepey, Gaboury had an outstanding meet against the Illini, as she finished second on the 1-meter board with a career-high 300.07 points, before winning the 3-meter with 323.10 points. She is the second Irish women’s diver to earn ACC accolades this season, as Streepey received the same honor two weeks ago after a solid meet against Purdue.
“I went into the meet really focused on enjoying it,” Gaboury says. “I tend to dive my best when I’m in the moment and enjoying it and when I’m competing with myself and not focusing on my competition. I really do love diving. Friday was a really great meet for me.”
The Bloomfield Hills, Michigan native has shown improvement in every season she has donned the Notre Dame blue and gold and head diving coach Caiming Xie points to her hard work both on and off the boards as a key to her success.
“Emma has shown a lot of progression during her career because she has improved her strength and in her height off the board and her jumping ability off the board,” Caiming says. “Her more consistent take off has helped her get improved scores.”
Gaboury points to her improvement in a couple of different dives in particular that have helped her on the 3-meter in particular.
“I’ve gotten more consistent with the front 3 ½ (a 2.8 DD dive) in the last couple of weeks,” Gaboury says. “That’s a dive that a lot of girls do, but to be able to hit it for 7’s like I did against Illinois is a pretty big dive.
“I’ve also gotten more steady on the reverse 2 ½. Everyone does reverses, but it’s a dive not a lot of people can hit consistently. I feel I’ve been getting more consistent with it. If you can hit a gainer in a meet where other people can’t, it’s a big advantage.”
Gaboury and her Irish teammates close out the fall in three weeks when the divers head to Iowa City, Iowa for the Hawkeye Invitational and the swimmers take off for Austin, Texas and the Texas Invitational.
