NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame swimming and diving program is back on campus and ready for competition after the holiday break. The Irish will host Big Ten neighbors Iowa and Illinois at home in the Rolf’s Aquatic Center on January 12 and 13. The team then makes the bus ride to Evanston, Illinois, to faceoff with Northwestern on Saturday.
The Irish are coming off a very successful first half to their season for both the men and women. The men were recently recognized by collegeswimming.com as one of the top ten most improved teams at the midway point of the college swimming season.
The team’s return to competition comes after spending part of the holiday break training at T2 Aquatics in Naples, Florida, from December 28 to January 10 to prepare them for the second half of the season that has them competing in four meets in two weeks. Head coach Mike Litzinger is pleased with his team’s training camp and excited to get the second half of the season in the pool started.
“It was a great training camp for both teams,” Litzinger said. “The ability to truly focus on daily training, race preparation, and team building really make these types of trips valuable. Seeing our group function together, and having individuals elevate both their training levels, and competitive levels during that training camp is what sparks a great second half of the year.”
Litzinger and his staff look to have their swimmers racing hard as they look ahead to the ACC Championships in February.
“We have built our second semester around great racing, and will be doing so the next four weekends in a row. It is the coaching staff’s hope that our team will continue to sharpen their skills in the lead up to the ACC Championships.”
Thursday’s meet is scheduled for a 5 p.m. ET start and the first event Friday is slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET. The Northwestern meet is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET at the Norris Aquatics Center.
Fans can follow live results of the meet on both team Twitter accounts, @NDWSwimDive and @NDMensswimdive, with a complete recap posted to und.com at the conclusion of the meet.
