Frilling And Mathews Fail To Advance In Doubles Draw At Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

Oct. 8, 2011

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The rough weekend continued for senior women’s tennis players Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) and Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) as the fifth-ranked and fourth-seeded duo fell in doubles action Friday at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship, hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club. In addition, Frilling also saw her singles consolation draw come to an end on the day.

The Irish pairing failed to find any sort of a rhythm in their round of 16 matchup with the 28th-ranked team of Brynn Boren and Sarah Toti of Tennessee. After the Volunteer tandem advanced from their opening match via retirement, the duo never allowed Frilling and Mathews into the match, claiming each of the eight games for an 8-0 decision.

Luck did not turn Frilling’s way in the singles main draw consolation bracket as she fell to #18 Lindsey Hardenbergh in the round of 16. After dropping the first set without much of a fight (6-1), the Irish senior captain battled with her opponent in the second set before finally succumbing 6-3 for the straight-sets defeat.

The Irish take to the court again on Saturday as they begin play in the doubles main draw consolation bracket, taking on the winner of the match between Mississippi’s Kristi Boxx and Abby Guthrie and Virginia’s Emily Fraser and Hana Tomlijanovic.
