Freshman Sensation Comes Through Again For Irish At Hawkeye Invite

iOWA CITY, Iowa – Freshman Frank Dyer again led the way for the Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team on the second day of action at the Hawkeye Invitational Saturday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Dyer swam to his second NCAA B-cut in as many days with a silver showing in the 200 freestyle (1:37.10), and led a trio of Irish swimmers who earned second-place finishes on the second night of finals action.

Michael Sullivan added a second silver to his name for the meet in the 400 individual medley (3:55.13) and Christopher Johnson also tallied second-place points with his swift swim in the 100 breaststroke (56.26). Petar Petrovic rounded out the individual medal haul for the squad with a third-place showing in the 100 backstroke (49.20).

200 Medley Relay: The quartet of Petrovic, Johnson, Conor Evans and Joshua Nosal powered to a fourth-place finish in 1:32.23 … the time was also under the previous meet record.

400 Individual Medley: Sullivan swam yet another strong time in the distance medley (3:55.13) en route to his silver medal … Bertie Nel (4th – 3:59.62), Colin Babcock (5th – 3:59.97) and Peter Koppel (8th – 4:05.25) also scored points in the event.

100 Butterfly: Evans was the top Irish performer in the event, turning in a prelims time of 50.78 and an evening finals time of 51.08 … Jordan Berry recorded a 51.01 and Colin Francesco stopped the clock in 51.50 in the C-final of the event.

200 Freestyle: Dyer led the way for the Irish with a quick 1:37.10 time in the event, good for second overall … in addition to being a NCAA B-cut, it was also under the previous meet record … Thomas Van Volkenburg swam to fifth place in 1:40.82.

100 Breaststroke: Johnson posted a strong showing in the event, swimming 56.26 at night to earn second place … Mason Weber (56.88) and Brian Maloy (56.96) were close behind, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

100 Backstroke: Petrovic led a trio of Irish swimmers in the A-final … his time of 49.20 was good for the bronze medal … also finished ahead of the previous meet record … Van Volkenburg (50.11) and Nosal (50.38) also scored points, placing sixth and seventh, respectively, in the event.

1-meter Diving: Eric Lex led all Irish divers with 329.45 points for a third-place showing.

800 Freestyle Relay: Fifth-place honors went to Nosal, Brus, Sullivan and Dyer who finished in 6:47.69.
