Freshman Freestyler Daniel Speers Wins Gold Medal On First Day of Swimming Competition at European Games

June 23, 2015

BAKU, Azerbaijan – Despite the first-ever European Games starting June 12th, incoming University of Notre Dame men’s swimmer Daniel Speers had to wait until June 23rd to dive into the pool with the British National Team. While the sport of swimming features a fair amount of splashing, the Brits made waves by medaling in the women’s 400m IM and 800m free and the men’s 4x100m free relay, of which Speers swam the third leg of the four-man relay.

Diving in first for the Brits was 18-year old Duncan Scott, who started off strong for the British with a 100m split time of 49.46. Up next was 17-year old Martyn Walton, who kept the British ahead of Russia and Italy with a 49.43 split time.

Third in the water, Speers – who signed with the Irish in November – kept pace with the field and logged a 50.68 time, leaving it to 17-year-old Cameron Kurle to secure the British victory with his 49.81 split-time. The Brits touched the wall in 3:19.38, with Italy placing second (3:20.19) and Russia earning bronze (3:20.22).
