Frank DeSico And Charlie Markson Named Irish Baseball Captains

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Senior second baseman Frank DeSico and senior centerfielder Charlie Markson have been named team captains for the 2013 Notre Dame baseball season.

“I am particularly happy for Frank and Charlie,” said third-year head coach Mik Aoki. “They have both shown remarkable growth on and off the field since their arrivals at Notre Dame, and I hope that it is especially gratifying to each of them that their teammates appointed them to lead our team in this year.

“We talk quite often in our program about being accountable to the highest level of conduct in the classroom, on the field and in the community – about representing yourself, your family, your faith, your University and your baseball program as best we can in every choice we encounter. Charlie and Frank have absolutely done that through their actions and words. I am thrilled that their peers recognized their leadership.”

DeSico (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) started all 56 games for Notre Dame at second base in 2012. He batted .308 with nine doubles and 24 RBI. DeSico added 13 stolen bases, 24 walks and 41 runs scored. He has played in 157 career games and started 154 – both are the most of any current Irish player. In fact, DeSico has started 154 of Notre Dame’s last 156 games at second base.

Markson (Whitefish Bay, Wisc./Whitefish Bay) batted .311 with six doubles, one triple, two home runs and 20 RBI in 51 games (49 starts) in 2012. He also led the Irish with 19 stolen bases. Markson took off over Notre Dame’s final 35 games last season. He batted .358 with two home runs, 15 RBI and 14 stolen bases.

Notre Dame will play the Ontario Blue Jays in an exhibition game at 6:30 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 28 at Frank Eck Stadium.
