Four Notre Dame Women's Swimmers, One Diver Earn Honorable Mention All-America Honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – – Notre Dame junior Carrie Nixon (Ouray, Colo.), senior Shannon Suddarth (Topeka, Kan.) and the 200 medley relay team all earned honorable mention All-America honors Friday evening at the 2000 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

The 200 medley relay team earned honorable mention All-America honors for the second year in a row, placing 14th with a time of 1:55.15. The 200 medley relay, composed this season of sophomore Kelly Hecking (Rutherford, N.J.), Suddarth, senior Elizabeth Barger (Littleton, Colo.) and Nixon, finished 16th in the same event a year ago.

Nixon continued to impress in 2000 after tying for 10th place with North Carolina’s Summer Mack in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:01.06. Earlier in the day, teammates senior Alison Newell (Parker, Colo.) and Barger each placed 28th and 30th respectively in the preliminaries.

Suddarth, meanwhile, finished 11th in the 100- meter breaststroke with a time of 1:09.78 to earn honorable mention All-America. As a sophomore, Suddarth was eighth in the 100 breaststroke and now has earned honorable mention All-America honors seven times and All- America honors once in her four-year career. Sophomore Heather Mattingly (Houston, Texas) finished 15th in the three-meter diving competition a day after taking 15th on the one-meter board to earn honorable mention All-America status, while Hecking placed 34th in the preliminaries of the 100-meter backstroke (1:03.42).

The 2000 NCAA championships conclude Saturday with preliminaries at 11 a.m. and finals beginning at 7 p.m. at the IUPUI Natatorium.
