Four Notre Dame Players Invited To USA Hockey Junior National Camp

Aug. 1, 1999

Four Notre Dame hockey players are among the 44 invitees who will participate this week at the 1999 USA Hockey junior national camp, to be held Aug. 3-8 in Lake Placid, N.Y. The Irish players include veteran centers Brett Henning (Huntington, N.Y.) and David Inman (Toronto, Ont.), in addition to incoming freshman forwards Connor Dunlop (St. Louis, Mo.) and John Wroblewski (Neenah, Wis.).

Henning will play for the “West” team during the three intrasquad games while the other three Irish players will be members of the “East” team. The event serves as a tryout and evaluation camp for USA Hockey coaches. Approximately 18 players from the camp will be selected to play on the under-20 junior national team in the third annual USA Hockey Summer Challenge, Aug. 9-14 in Lake Placid.

The Summer Challenge is a week-long, double round-robin tournament, with the under-20 teams from Finland and Switzerland also participating. The exhibition tournament serves as an evaluation camp for the junior national team and as a measuring stick for the 1999-2000 World Junior Championship, which will be held Dec. 25- Jan. 3 in Skelleftea and Umea, Sweden.

At the conclusion of the junior national camp, the players chosen for the Summer Challenge will be joined by 10 veteran junior national team members, thus forming the final squad that will face the teams from Finland and Switzerland.

Notre Dame (4) and Michigan State (5) produced the most invitees to the 44-player junior national camp.

Dunlop and Wroblewski are among 13 of the invitees who spent 1998-99 as members of the USA under-18 national team, a program that Henning played for in 1997-98 before centering the third Irish line for most of ’98-’99. Inman-who own joint citizenship in Canada and the United States-also was invited to the USA tryout camp in 1998. Inman centered the second Irish line for most of his freshman season and recently was a second-round National Hockey League draft pick of the New York Rangers (Henning was selected in the ninth round by the N.Y. Islanders).

Notre Dame hockey players have participated in each of the previous three world junior championships. Center Ben Simon was a member of the 1996-97 team and was joined in ’97-’98 by right wing Joe Dusbabek. Left wing Dan Carlson played on the 1998-99 USA junior national team. (Simon and Dusbabek are seniors on the 1999-2000 Irish team while Carlson is a junior).

In addition to Henning, Dunlop and Wroblewski, Notre Dame’s 1999-2000 roster includes two other players with past experience in the USA Hockey Developmental Program. Incoming freshman defenseman Paul Harris was a teammate of Dunlop and Wroblewski with the 1998-99 under-18 team while first-year right wing Michael Chin played for the under-18 team in 1997-98 before spending last season with the Des Moines Buccaneers.
