Four Irish Rowers Garner Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Accolades

May 24, 2004

Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame senior stroke Natalie Ladine (Sacramento, Calif.) was honored as a first-team Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) all-Central Region selection and was one of 124 recipients for the CRCA Scholar-Athlete Award.

In addition, senior Alice Bartek (Omaha, Neb.) garnered second-team all-Central Region honors, while senior Jacqueline Hazen (Germantown, Tenn.) and junior Katie Chenoweth (East Lansing, Mich.) earned the Scholar-Athlete awards.

All four of these rowers will be competing in the upcoming NCAA Championships, May 28-30 in Sacramento, Calif., as Notre Dame’s varsity eight boat earned an at-large berth for the second time in school history.

Ladine earns all-region honors for the second consecutive year after garnering second-team accolades as a junior. She become the sixth different Irish rower to earn first-team honors as Notre Dame has had at least one individual named to that team each of the last five years. Ladine also is one of just three rowers to earn all-region honors on multiple occasions. Ashlee Warren was a three-time honoree (2001-03) as a first-team selection, while Michelle Olsgard garnered first-team honors in both ’01 and ’02. Ladine also becomes just the third Irish rower (the other was Warren) to earn both the CRCA Scholar-Athlete Award and garner all-Central Regional honors in the same season.

Ladine has been a member of Notre Dame’s varsity eight crew each of the last three seasons. A co-captain in 2004, she has been the stroke in the varsity eight boat that will be competing as an at-large entrant at the NCAA Championships. Ladine also was a member of the varsity eight crew which rowed at the ’02 NCAAs.

All four rowers – Ladine, Bartek, Chenoweth and Hazen – were instrumental in Notre Dame capturing the school’s first-ever BIG EAST Rowing Challenge team title in ’04. In addition, they were members of the varsity eight boat which won the gold medal at that event.

Ladine graduated from the College of Science with a degree in pre-professional studies, earning a 3.54 overall grade point average. Hazen earned her degree in liberal studies from the College of Arts and Letters and compiled a 3.72 grade index. Chenoweth is enrolled in the College of Arts and Letters as an athropology and spanish major and has a 3.74 grade point average following six semesters.
