Four Irish Land on ACC All-Academic Team

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Tuesday that four Irish baseball players have been named to its All-Academic Team.

Seniors Jake Johnson and Alex Kerschner and juniors Eric Gilgenbach and Matt Vierling each earned academic honors from the conference.

Johnson, a finance major, wrapped his senior season with a .292 average and 22 RBI. Johnson was named a Senior CLASS Award candidate, receiving recognition for community involvement, classroom accomplishments, character and competition.

Kerschner graduated with a degree in science-business and plans on attending medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. A walk-on to the Irish baseball team, Kerschner batted .284 with a career-high 15 extra-base hits and 24 RBI as a senior.

Gilgenbach, who is studying finance, batted .270 with a team-best 45 RBI and a team-high-tying 10 home runs in 2018.

Vierling was selected 137th overall in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft, going to the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round. Vierling, who is studying management consulting at Notre Dame, hit .310 with a team-high-tying 10 homers and 43 RBI last season.
