Four Former Irish Players Make Major League Lacrosse Rosters

May 11, 2010

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Former Notre Dame men’s lacrosse standouts D.J. Driscoll, Regis McDermott, Michael Podgajny and Duncan Swezey are on Major League Lacrosse (MLL) rosters as the league sets to embark on its 10th season when play gets underway on Saturday, May 15.

The MLL, which is the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, on Tuesday announced each team’s 23-man active and eight-man practice rosters for the 2010 campaign.

Driscoll, a defenseman, is on the active roster for the Chicago Machine. Driscoll was an all-star selection for the Machine in 2009 after spending the previous three seasons with the Los Angeles Riptide. In November, Driscoll was named to the 23-man United States national team roster that will compete in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship in Manchester, England from July 14-24, 2010. Driscoll played in 51 games and collected 202 ground balls for the Irish from 2003-06. Driscoll earned second-team All-America honors as a senior in 2006. He was an honorable mention All-America pick the previous year.

McDermott has been named to the practice squad for the Long Island Lizards. The Lizards selected McDermott in the third round of the 2009 MLL Draft. The defenseman played in 61 games and picked up 134 ground balls during his Fighting Irish career, which spanned 2006-09. McDermott copped third-team All-America honors in 2009.

Podgajny, a midfielder, is listed on the active roster for the Boston Cannons. He played two games for the Cannons one season ago. In 2008, Podgajny spent his rookie campaign with the San Francisco Dragons and tallied five goals and five assists. While at Notre Dame from 2005-08, he played in 53 games and registered 68 goals and 36 assists. Podgajny earned honorable mention All-America accolades during his junior and senior seasons.

Swezey is on the practice roster for the Denver Outlaws. The standout attackman played in 58 career games with the Irish from 2006-09 and produced 56 goals and 48 assists. Swezey led Notre Dame with 20 assists during his senior campaign.

All six MLL squads had until 2:00 p.m. (ET) on Monday to submit their rosters to the league office. Teams were allowed to open training camp for the 2010 season on April 24th with a maximum of 40 players on their pre-season active rosters (PSAR). The practice squad size for each team was increased to eight players this season to allow for more flexibility once the world championships occur in July. MLL teams with players still participating in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) championship game this Friday may protect those players through week one of the MLL season, but must pare down their rosters again to 23 by 5:00 p.m. (ET) on Monday, May 17th.
