Former Notre Dame Student-Athlete Josh Atkinson Dies At Age 26

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Josh Atkinson (’14), a two-year monogram winner in both football and track and field for the University of Notre Dame, died Tuesday, Dec. 25. He was 26.

Atkinson played in 26 career games for the Irish, registering 10 career tackles. As a freshman in 2011, Atkinson saw action in eight games and recorded two special teams tackles. The next season, he played in all 13 games and totaled five stops on the year, including three at Boston College on Nov. 10, 2012. Atkinson registered three tackles in 2013 in five appearances.

Atkinson was also a standout on the Notre Dame track and field squad, competing in sprint events for the Irish. He placed fourth in the 100-meter dash at the 2012 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships and finished fifth in the 60-meter dash at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships earlier that year.

Atkinson took 15th place at the 2014 ACC Indoor Championships in the 200-meter dash. At the 2014 ACC Outdoor Championships, he placed fifth in the 100-meter dash and seventh in the 200-meter event, and was part of the 4×100-meter relay team, which took second place.

Atkinson graduated in May 2014 with a degree in film, television and theatre from the College of Arts and Letters.
