Former Irish Sprinter Set To Compete In 2002 Olympic Games

Feb. 20, 2002

Marton Gyulai, a 2001 Notre Dame graduate and monogram winner as a member of the men’s track and field team, will compete in the 2002 Olympic Games this weekend as a member of the Hungary four-man bobsled team.

Gyulai was a four-year member of the Notre Dame track and field team, competing in the short sprint events throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. He earned a monogram after the 2001 season, which was highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 60 meters at an indoor dual meet against Michigan State and a 13th-place effort in the 100 meters at the Boilermaker Open during the 2001 outdoor campaign.

Gyulai’s four-man bobsled team, which includes Nicholas Frankl, Peter Pallai and Bertalan Pinter, took first place at the America’s Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y., on Dec. 15, 2001. Their time of 1:56.68 edged out the Austrian, United States and Croatian team.

The four-man bobsled competition is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 22, with the first heat set to begin at 5:30 EST at Utah’s Olympic Park. The second heat is set for 7:20 EST on Friday, with the fourth and fifth heats scheduled for the same start times on Saturday, Feb. 23.
