Former Detroit Red Wing Great Steve Yzerman To Be Guest Speaker At Third Annual Drop The Puck Reception

Notre Dame, Ind. – Former Detroit Red Wing superstar Steve Yzerman will be the guest speaker at Notre Dame hockey’s annual “Drop The Puck” season-opening reception that will be held on Wednesday, October 10 at the Joyce Center Field House. Fans will have a chance to meet the 2007-08 Notre Dame players and staff prior to the annual Blue/Gold intrasquad scrimmage that will be played at 7:30 p.m. The “Drop The Puck” reception is sponsored by Crocs with dinner provided by Famous Dave’s.

The event is free for Notre Dame hockey season ticket holders, including Blue/Gold and Pick 6 pack ticket holders. The cost to the public is $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for youth/senior non-season ticket holders. Tickets can be purchased through the Notre Dame ticket office, via und.com or by calling 574-631-7356. The cost of the ticket will also include admission to the Blue/Gold intrasquad scrimmage that will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The gates to the Joyce Center Field House will open at 5:30 p.m. with the Irish players available for autographs beginning at 5:45 p.m. The speaking portion of the program will begin at 6:30 p.m. when the players leave to prepare for the Blue/Gold game.

This year’s special guest speaker is no stranger to Michiana hockey fans. Steve Yzerman played 22 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings, helping them to three Stanley Cup championships in 1996-97, 1997-98 and 2001-02. Selected team captain at the age of 21, he served in that role for 20 years, making him the longest serving captain in NHL history.

Selected in the first round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, fourth overall by the Red Wings, Yzerman went on to play 1,514 career games for the same franchise. During his 22-year career, the Cranbrook, B.C., native scored 692 goals and assisted on 1,063 assists for 1,755 points. He ranks 10th all-time in NHL history for games played, eighth in goals scored, seventh in assists and sixth in points. In 196 playoff games, Yzerman had 70 goals and 115 assists for 185 playoff points.

A nine-time NHL all-star, Yzerman won the Lester B. Pearson Trophy (1988-89), the Conn Smythe Trophy (1997-98) as the playoff most valuable player, the Frank J. Selke Trophy (1999-00), as the NHL’s top defensive forward and the Bill Masterton Trophy (2002-03) for perseverance as he came back from a career-threatening knee injury.

“The Captain,” became the sixth Detroit Red Wing to have his number (19) retired on January 2, 2007, during pre-game ceremonies. Now in his 24th season with the Red Wing organization, Yzerman serves as the vice-president of the Red Wings where works with the management team of senior vice-president Jim Devellano, General Manager Ken Holland and Assistant Manager Jim Nill on all aspects of the Red Wings’ organization.
