Oct. 16, 2000

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – With Saturday’s win over the Midshipmen, Matt LoVecchio takes the lead in terms of quarterback wins. He is currently 2-0 as the starting quarterback.

Notre Dame’s other starting quarterbacks this season Arnaz Battle and Gary Godsey went 1-1 as the starting quarterbacks for the Irish.

DRIVER WORKS WAY INTO RECORDS

Tony Driver became just the second player in NCAA Division I-A history to return a pair of fumbles for touchdowns — since a 1992 NCAA change permitting defensive players to advance fumbles regardless of where on the field they occur. He joined Minnesota’s Tyrone Carter who returned a pair of fumbles for touchdowns against Syracuse on Sept. 21, 1996.

He also became the first Irish player in a season or a career to return a pair of fumbles for touchdowns, let alone in one game or one quarter. The last Notre Dame player to score two touchdowns was Dave Waymer, who ran back two interceptions in a 40-15 win against Miami (Fla.) in the 1979 Mirage Bowl in Tokyo.

RANKINGS

Irish finally entered the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll this week. Notre Dame entered the rankings at the 22nd spot. The Irish just barely edges out Minnesota by four votes.

Notre Dame remained at the No. 20 spot in the Associated Press poll for the second consecutive week.

BOIMAN RECEIVES RECOGNITION

The Sporting News recognized Notre Dame outside linebacker Rocky Boiman as one of the great unknowns for this season. The junior has 35 sacks this season, which is the third best on the team. He also has registered two and a half sacks as well.
