NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Former Notre Dame All-American right-handed pitcher David Phelps lit up the Class AA Eastern League for the Trenton Thunder before getting called up to the New York Yankees Class AAA affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier this month. Phelps was scheduled to participate in the Eastern League All-Star game, but his promotion prevented the opportunity.

Phelps, who was a 14th-round draft pick of the Bronx Bombers in 2008, went 6-0 with a league-best 2.04 earned-run average over his first 14 starts with the Thunder. He allowed just 63 hits in 88.1 innings of work as opponents recorded a .199 batting average against him. Phelps punched out a league-high 84 and walked only 23. He also surrendered just two home runs.

Phelps is 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA in two starts with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He yielded five runs, three earned, in 5.2 innings of work in his debut at Class-AAA, but rebounded in his next start with five strikeouts and no earned runs in 6.0 innings. Phelps has fanned nine batters without a walk over his two outings.

Brian Stavisky, the only Notre Dame player ever to post career batting average above .350 while also hitting 30-plus home runs and 10-plus triples, recently retired from professional baseball. A sixth round draft pick of the Oakland A’s in the 2002 MLB draft, Stavisky spent nine years in the Oakland (2002-07), Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2008) and Philadelphia Phiilies (2009-10) organizations. He climbed as high as Class AAA on four different occasions over the 2006-07 campaigns. Stavisky finished his pro career with a .301 batting average, 83 home runs and 445 RBI.

Here is an update on the other 12 players currently working their way up through the MLB minor league system. The list does not include 2009 first round draft pick A.J. Pollock, who suffered a fractured growth plate in his right arm in a spring training accident. He underwent surgery and is expected to fully recover, but will likely miss the entire season.
