NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Senior forward Steven Fogarty has signed an entry-level contract with the New York Rangers, the National Hockey League (NHL) team announced today (March 29).

“It’s an extreme honor to sign with the Rangers,” Fogarty said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the opportunity the coaching staff game me here at Notre Dame. I’m so thankful for the memories over the last four years, and for the coaching staff and my teammates. They say college is the best four years of your life and that was true. This is just the start, but I’m one step closer to my dream.”

“We’re extremely happy for Steven and he deserves this opportunity,” Notre Dame Head Coach Jeff Jackson said. “He was a great player for us over the last four years and he was an even better person and captain. I’ve never had a player-coach relationship like I’ve had with Steven. He’s a tremendous young man and hopefully he’ll have a great pro career.”

This past season, Fogarty played in all 37 games for the Irish and scored 10 goals and added 13 assists for 23 points, all of which were career-high totals for the Edina, Minnesota native. He served as the team’s captain as a junior and senior to become the 15th two-year captain in Notre Dame hockey history.

Fogarty opened the 2015-16 season with his first career hat trick in Notre Dame’s season-opening win at Penn State (Oct. 16), while also adding an assist for a four-point night. A member of Notre Dame’s Rosenthal Leadership Academy, Fogarty had five multi-point games as a senior.

Fogarty skated in 150 games in his Notre Dame career, scoring 27 goals and adding 38 assists for 65 points. He totaled six power-play goals and had three game winners while also finishing with a +17 rating. He helped lead the Irish to three NCAA Tournament appearances in his four seasons.

Fogarty was selected by the New York Rangers in the third round (72nd overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in Saint Paul, Minnesota. After playing for Edina, he joined the Penticton Vees (BCHL) for the 2011-12 season before attending Notre Dame.
