Five Favorites Photos of 2017: Women's Soccer

Dec. 16, 2017

By Erin Locascio

Erin Locascio is a photography and graphic design intern for the University of Notre Dame. Throughout the year she has taken photos at fall sports such as women’s soccer, football, men’s soccer and volleyball. Take a look at her five favorites from the 2017 women’s soccer season.

In each post Locascio will give background information on the photo and why she selected it.

Eva In The Middle

The Fighting Irish women’s soccer team scored many goals during the 2017 season, 46 to be exact. That many goals caused for a lot of celebrating images, which were typically my favorite photos. This particular celebration was in a win versus Santa Clara early in the season. Eva Hurm is the middle of this shot being lifted up by her teammates with a big smile. Hurm had assisted on the goal and finished that game with two assists in the 4 -1 victory.

Surive And Advance

With all those goals scored there was bound to be another celebration photo as one of my favorites. This one was from one of the most important games of the season for the Fighting Irish women’s soccer team. In their last home game of the season against IUPUI, the Fighting Irish needed to win their first round NCAA game to advance to the second round of the postseason. Kate O’Connor is seen embracing a teammate who just put the Irish in the lead, and they would hold on for the 4-0 win.

Hurm Air-Born

Eva Hurm was influential to Notre Dame’s offense right away. In her freshman campaign she would cut in and out of the box, make runs down the field and make it tough on the other team from start to finish. There are many photos from this past season of the players kicking the ball, but this one tops them all. Eva just beat her defender and is caught at the moment of the kick where both feet are in the air to send the ball in the box. The light was perfect this day and makes Hurm the focus as the sun shines on her and the ball.

Westendorf Using Her Head

Westendorf is captured perfectly heading the ball. This was during a double-overtime game versus South Carolina, which also happened to be the first game I shot for women’s soccer. Even after an entire season, and all the photos of Westendorf, who was a crucial player on this team, this shot still stands out and will always be one of my favorite. The timing could not have been better as the ball has just made contact with Westendorf’s head.

Sandra Yu Competes

Sandra Yu was one of the best players on the field every game for the Fighting Irish. The All-American finished the season with eight goals and five assists to total 21 points. Sandra contributed to the offense whether she was scoring, assisting or just bringing the ball up the field. She was such a threat that defenders could not leave her alone. Sandra has some of my favorites photos through the season and this one from the first home game of the season was never topped. The placement of her foot to the ball as the defender tries to get the ball and corner Sandra makes for a great soccer moment captured. This is not only a great photo of just Sandra, but I love that you can see the Carolina jersey and the concentration on both athletes’ faces.
