Five Favorite Photos Of The Week

Nov. 14, 2017

By Erin Locascio

Erin Locascio is a photography and graphic design intern for the University of Notre Dame. Throughout the year she will have a weekly post about her favorite five photos from the week’s events. This week Locascio is highlighting Notre Dame women’s soccer and volleyball.

In each post Locascio will give background information on the photo and why she selected it.

Eva Is Back!

Eva Hurm went down with a knee injury early in the season. It was heartbreaking as she was a solid fixture in the lineup and made an immediate impact to the team as a freshman. Fast forward to Saturday night’s first-round matchup and she’s back out there fighting with her teammates to keep their season alive. She had two great opportunities to score and made an impact just as she had before the injury. This picture is also one of the best of the week because she’s in the air, as well as the ball and you can tell her eyes are looking down in front of the ball to defeat her defender who looks to be a bit off-balanced. Hurm was caught in perfect stride with the ball. Another thing that makes this photo special is that her jersey number as well as the Notre Dame lettering can be seen so perfectly. The story behind a picture of a great athlete makes a good picture an even better one.

Hendricks Takes Off

Shannon Hendricks brings the ball up against IUPUI to start an offensive attack. This picture stood out every time I went through the hundreds of pictures from the IUPUI game. At first, I had only noticed the picture after this which is Hendricks in full running stride with the ball in front. That shot is average and captured every game. However, this one is above average and I think it’s because Shannon is in the air but caught at the moment she hits the ball with the side of her foot. The way she is in the air, the ball is on the ground and Hendricks’ foot is turned makes it a unique shot better than the rest.

Irish Goal!

The Fighting Irish came away with a 5-0 win against IUPUI on Saturday night. Jacobs opened up the scoring midway through the first half. Kate O’Connor hit the crossbar on a shot from 30 yards out and Jacobs was in the box to put the rebound in the back of the net. This is the moment where Jacobs is running over to celebrate with other teammates, especially O’Connor. The happiness and excitement seen on their faces just shows how much they play for each other. Although Jacobs scored, she can’t wait to hug O’Connor.

Jemma Battles At The Net

Jemma Yeadon has been in a few of my favorite pictures over the past few weeks, but this one is a bit different. This one shows her at the net battling against the Virginia players. I changed my shooting angle and placement to change up the outcome of action pictures like this. I wanted the net to be in the middle to really show that there are two teams going against each other, battling for each point. Most volleyball pictures might just show the one team but this shows both sides of the game. It adds to the shot that both players are touching the ball and Jemma’s face can actually been seen; her face isn’t hidden like it might be when she’s blocking or hitting.

Holt Fired Up

Caroline Holt is the setter for the Fighting Irish volleyball team. She is a senior captain that plays every point for her teammates and being a setter, celebrates her teammates as hard as, if not harder than, anyone on the team. She can be seen in the middle of almost every celebration in every match, deservingly so, considering most of the time she had just set up the kill her teammate just got. That was the case in this celebration where Kuhn had just recorded a kill and Holt could not be more excited, screaming in Kuhn’s face. Her eyes say all that needs to be said about her passion and drive for this game and her team.
