Five Favorite Photos Of The Week

Oct. 18, 2017

By Erin Locascio

Erin Locascio is a fall photography and graphic design intern for the University of Notre Dame. Throughout the fall she will have a weekly post about her favorite five photos from the week’s events. This week Locascio is highlighting Notre Dame women’s volleyball, men’s ice hockey and women’s soccer.

In each post Locascio will give background information on the photo and why she selected it.

Morrison Cuts The Lead

This is a shot that clearly shows a goal being scored, which is a big reason this was chosen this week. Hockey goals are not the easiest pictures to capture. The angle has to be just right to see both the puck going into the net, as well as the player who scored it. Cam Morrison comes from behind the net to tap the puck in which would cut the score in half versus Denver. The way the goalie is reaching back trying to get the puck while Cam taps it in makes it one of the best photos of the week.

Heard Sends Ball Up Field

Rachel Heard sends the ball up the field to start an attack for the Notre Dame women’s soccer team against Virginia Tech. The angle of the ball and Heard’s body is why this was chosen as one of the best photo’s of the week. Usually, photos of a kick are best when the athlete has their leg back with the ball still on the ground, which has been shown as one of my favorites in past weeks. However, this one is a favorite because it was taken at just the right angle where the ball is still in frame and Heard’s eyes are looking right at it.

Johnson Pancakes Ball

This will end up being one of my favorites of the year and could be the best from this past week of action. Natalie Johnson “pancakes” the ball to keep it in the air for Notre Dame to continue and hopefully win the point. Pancaking the ball is what Johnson is showing perfectly with her hand flat on the ground and the ball bouncing right off. Johnson did this multiple times in this particular set versus Georgia Tech on Friday night.

St. Cyr With The Save!

The Fighting Irish Hockey team faced a talented Denver team this past weekend and in the first game, freshman Dylan St. Cyr was put in the net for his second career start. He may not have gotten the win, however he did come away with a phenomenal 46 save performance in a 2-2 tie. This was one of the many saves he made throughout the 65 minutes of action. It shows that he is on the move to the other side of the net and got his glove up at just the right time to make the save.

Bench Celebration

It is basically a known fact that volleyball celebrates more than other sports, or at least celebrates more consistently. However, most pictures of the celebrations are of the girls on the court. This is one of the few shots where that is not the case and we get to see the players on the bench celebrating their teammates winning a point. The happiness and excitement shown in their smiles, screams and fist pumps are why it’s one of the best pictures from this past week of action. Finally athletes who cheer on their teammates all game and season long get to be in the spotlight.
