Five Favorite Photos Of The Week

Jan. 9, 2018

By Erin Locascio

Erin Locascio is a photography and graphic design intern for the University of Notre Dame. Throughout the year she will have a weekly post about her favorite five photos from the week’s events. This week Locascio is highlighting Notre Dame women’s basketball, ice hockey and men’s basketball

In each post Locascio will give background information on the photo and why she selected it.

All-Time Wins Leader

Mike Brey passed former head coach Digger Phelps as the all-times wins leader for the Notre Dame men’s basketball program last Wednesday night with the win over NC State. This photo was my personal favorite that I got during the post-game celebration. Digger is holding the game ball that he will hand over to Brey to “pass the torch” after the hug. The players seen celebrating behind the coaches’ embrace is what makes this the best photo. The photo shows how much this moment means to everyone involved, especially the guys who got Brey this record win.

Irish Dunk!

The Notre Dame men’s basketball team had a lot of dunks in their win over NC State last week. This was the best one of the bunch for a few reasons. The first one being that because of where I was shooting from in the first half, the dunks were at the opposite end of the court and this was the only one done right in front of me during the second half. That gives this dunk the advantage already. Then, with the lights shining down right above the ball and hoop there is a nice focus point that also makes Elijah Burns’ muscles and face stand out.

Young Floats

Notre Dame women’s basketball took down Miami last Thursday night. Jackie Young finished the game with 11 points, five assists and three steals. She did take home the best photo of the game with this drive to the basket in the fourth quarter. Young was caught at the perfect moment as she is floating in the air before she extends to put the ball in the hoop. Besides the fact that she was caught mid-air, where you can see all the women’s basketball banners in the back, you can see her face perfectly with her hair flying in the back. Additionally, the ball is seen and she has it in a spot where the defender can not get it. Overall, its an athletic play by an athletic basketball player.

Irish Sweep Big Ten

The Notre Dame hockey team has had many reasons to celebrate lately. The Fighting Irish have won 15 straight and have swept every team in the Big Ten conference. With all those wins comes a lot of goals scored, which means celebrations such as this. In the game on Sunday against Michigan, Oglevie scored what would end up being the game winning goal in the second period, and the guys did not hold back in their celebration. Colin Theisen was one of the guys who assisted on the goal and could not contain his excitement as he jumped on top of his teammates. That moment, caught at the height of his jump along with his teammates seen screaming underneath him made this an easy choice.

Malmquist Controls Puck

Dylan Malmquist skates down the ice to start an offensive drive for the Fighting Irish against Michigan. There are many reasons that this was one of the my favorite from this past weekend’s hockey series against the Wolverines. The first is because with the lens I had on, you get to see Malmquist’s upper body including the stick and puck. The angle that it is taken from gives you a great way to look at the photo, whether you start from his head down to the puck or the other way around. Then, the background is what makes it one of the best of the week with the Irish script written above the stands and the stands looking full supporting the Irish.
