First Round Of C&F Bank Intercollegiate Suspended Due To Weather

March 24, 2013

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The first round of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate, hosted by the College of William and Mary, was suspended Sunday due to inclement weather in the Williamsburg area.

Play is expected to resume at 7:45 a.m. Monday on the Kingsmill Resort River Course, with groups remaining on the course from round one returning to where players’ last shots lay. Tee times for the second round are tentatively scheduled to begin at 8:00.

All five Notre Dame players entered in the field completed their first rounds, and the Irish are currently tied for ninth place after firing a cumulative score of 289 (+9).

Freshman Cory Sciupider posted the Notre Dame round of the season, carding a bogey-free three-under par 67 to claim a share of the lead with Eastern Michigan’s Casey Olsen.

“Cory played not only his best collegiate round, but one of the cleanest rounds I have seen in a long time,” Irish head coach Jim Kubinski said. “He wasn’t close to being in trouble the whole day. He made three birdies but they were all inside of five feet. With a little luck, he may have shot a 64 or 65.”

Right behind Sciupider on the leaderboard is junior Andrew Lane, whose two-under 68 is currently tied for third place. Lane made four birdies and one double bogey in his opening 18 holes.

“Laner hit one out of bounds on No.18, but was otherwise clean, too,” Kubinski said. “He shot a pretty easy 68, making longer putts at both six and seven, but he had several other good chances as well.”

Junior Niall Platt and senior Paul McNamara III each turned in seven-over par rounds of 77 in their first rounds, while a 79 from sophomore Tyler Wingo was discarded in the five-count-four scoring format.

“Paul, Niall and Tyler were all in position through 12 holes to put us in the team lead, but each made sloppy mistakes coming in,” Kubinski said. “We need them to pick it back up, we need all five players going strong tomorrow.”
