For the second straight day, senior Ted Brown captured two individual victories to help propel the Irish to a dual meet victory.

Fighting Irish Well Represented At U.S. Swimming Nationals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team had eight current or future student-athletes compete at last week’s ConocoPhillips Swimming National Championships in Irvine, Calif. Seven current Fighting Irish swimmers, along with one incoming freshman participated at the event, which took place Tuesday, Aug. 1 through Saturday, Aug. 5 at the William Woollett, Jr. Aquatic Center.

Five of the Fighting Irish swimmers are part of the Irish Aquatics Swim Club, which is based out of South Bend, Ind. A trio of rising seniors in Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western), Louis Cavadini (South Bend, Ind./Riley), and Brian Freeman (Sanger, Calif./Immanuel) along with rising sophomore Daniel Lutkus (Granger, Ind./Penn) placed 13th in the 800-meter freestyle relay with a time of 7:48.21 for the Irish Aquatics. Tim Kegelman (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) teamed up with classmates Brown, Cavadini and Freeman to place 15th in the 400-meter medley relay with a mark of 3:56.00.

The Irish Aquatics also placed 15th in the 400-meter freestyle relay, with Lutkus, Brown, Cavadini and Kegelman posting a time of 3:32.79.

Brown, who will serve as a tri-captain for the 2006-07 season along with Cavadini and Kegelman, finished in a tie for 51st in the 200-meter freestyle prelims as he touched the wall in 1:54.03. Kegelman clocked a time of 57.92 to tie for 70th in the prelims of the 100-meter fly.

Also competing as an individual was rising sophomore Jace Hopper (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows), who placed 60th in the 400-meter freestyle prelims in a time of 4:04.44 as a member of Desert Storm Swimming. Eric Swenson (Scotch Plains, N.J./St. Joseph) competed for the Jersey Gators swim club and swam the 100-meter breaststroke. The junior-to-be placed 51st in a time of 1:05.53.

Incoming freshman Tyler Angelo (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas), swimming for the Orinda Aquatics, placed 63rd in the 200-meter breast during preliminary action with a mark of 2:26.45.
