BUFFALO, N.Y. – David Graves scored 20 points, Matt Carroll had 18 and Chris Thomas added 17 as Notre Dame defeated Canisius 84-73 on Saturday.

Brian Dux led Canisius with 17 points, and Andy Bush added 13.

Notre Dame’s Ryan Humphrey, hobbled by an injured foot, refused to take the game off and contributed 14 points.

Both teams traded leads for the first 28 minutes, with Canisius (1-5) relying on outside shooting and Notre Dame (9-1) counting on its dominance under the basket.

Notre Dame is off to its best start since 1985, while Canisius has lost five in a row.

Harold Swanagan, who had 15 points, dunked at 54-54 to begin a decisive 10-1 run. Carroll sank a three-pointer to extend the run.

Griff Hodari Mallory appeared to have a possible three-point play when he banked in a layup at 69-64, but instead was tossed for his fifth foul with less than five minutes left. Canisius would never get any closer.

The Fighting Irish capitalized at the free-throw line, shooting 79.5 percent, compared to 50 percent for the Golden Griffs. Notre Dame also outrebounded Canisius, 40-27.

Canisius, which led 35-33 at halftime, made 9-of-27 shots from the three-point zone.

The Canisius bench outscored Notre Dame’s 19-0.
