Fighting Irish Swimming & Diving Open Up Season With Rare Outdoor Meet at Michigan State

Sept. 29, 2016

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame swimming and diving team opens its 2016-17 season this Friday when they make the bus trip north to Michigan State to face both the Spartans and Iowa Hawkeyes at the Charles McCaffree Pool in East Lansing, Michigan. The rare outdoor meet for the Irish starts at 4 p.m.

Following fellow Atlantic Coast Conference swimming programs on combined men and women teams, the Irish will compete together the first time since 1995 under Head Coach Mike Litzinger. Litzinger is excited to be competing this early in the fall.

“I have been looking forward to this Friday since April of last year. Not only as we get to compete with two historically respected programs in Iowa and MSU, but mostly because we are competing together as one team since 1995.”

Under the guidance of coach Mike Litzinger the swimming program has seen considerable success, having 10 swimmers participate in the NCAA Championships and breaking six school Notre Dame records.

Leading the Irish in 2016-17 is the quintet of Molly Barry, Annie Crea, Catherine Mulquin, Tommy Anderson and Reed Fujan. The five seniors should give Notre Dame the leadership needed for a competitive 2016-17 schedule. Coach Litzinger is excited about his team’s leadership going into the season.

“We have a great mix of senior leadership and new talent. The group has dedicated themselves to working hard and together this Fall. Our results this season should reflect just that. I am thrilled that we get to represent this great University together in competition!”

The Irish start their home meet season at the Rolfs Aquatic Center a week after on Friday, October 7 for the traditional Dennis Stark Relays. Named for the first head coach of both teams, this year’s meet will be the 51st of its kind.
