Fighting Irish Second Following First Round Of The Lady Jaguar Invitational

Nov. 7, 2005

AUGUSTA, Ga. – A first round total of 310 (+22) has the Notre Dame women’s golf team in second-place at the Lady Jaguar Invitational at the par 72, 6,094-yard Forest Hills Golf Club. Augusta State, the host school for the event, leads the 13-team field after carding a 14-over par 302. Junior Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) led the Irish on day one with a two-over par 74 to currently reside in a two-way tie for second and three shots off the pace heading into Tuesday’s second and final round of play.

“Our putting wasn’t very good today,” stated Notre Dame head coach Debby King. “We have our work cut out for us. I feel that we have to shoot a 292 tomorrow to win but I’m confident that we can do it.”

Augusta State’s Lauren Smith is atop the individual leader board after firing a one-under par 71 during the first round on her home course.

Senior co-captain Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) shot a four-over par 76 to reside in a tie for sixth and sophomore Jane Lee (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula) is tied for tenth with a six-over par 78.

Freshman Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Collegiate Park Institute) carded a 10-over par 82, while senior Lauren Gebauer (Columbus, Ohio/Arlington) shot an 83 as they reside in ties for 33rd and 38th, respectively.

“Noriko (Nakazaki) was pretty solid today,” said King. “Katie (Brophy) was upset with how she was hitting it in warm-ups but she came through and she was happy with her score. Lisa (Maunu) was disappointed because she was seven-over on putts alone and Lauren (Gebauer) was missing the greens. But we think that we have it worked out. You have to be careful with where you place the ball on this course.”

Tuesday’s second and final round will get underway with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. (ET). Live results of the tournament are available at golfstat.com. For additional information please log on to und.com or call the Notre Dame athletics hotline at (574) 631-3000.
