Fighting Irish Prep For Shamrock Invitational

Jan. 26, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Iowa and Ohio State will join the Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team for the 2012 edition of the Shamrock Invitational set to take place Jan. 27-28 at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The first of three sessions in the championship-format meet starts Friday at 6:00 p.m. (ET), with Saturday’s morning session beginning at 10:00 a.m. Notre Dame will honor its outgoing senior class prior to the evening session which begins at 5:00 p.m. to close the meet.

Live stats will be available at UND.com.

The Irish are quite familiar with both of this weekend’s visiting opponents. Notre Dame (6-3) traveled to Iowa’s Hawkeye Invitational last December and finished third among the seven-team field. Notre Dame tallied 511 points, finishing behind only first-place Michigan (967) and host Iowa (723). Notre Dame fell to Iowa in the 2011 Shamrock Invitational, 194-174.

The Fighting Irish last battled with the Buckeyes at the 2009 Ohio State Invitational, finishing fourth (222 pts.) among the national field.

Sophomore Frank Dyer ranks among the nation’s best in a number of individual events – 50 free (49th – 20.19), 100 free (52nd – 44.88), 200 free (7th – 1:35.58) and 500 free (23rd – 4:22.28) – while junior Christopher Johnson is 46th in the 100 breast (55.23).

During last season’s Shamrock Invitational, (then) senior Eric Lex celebrated his final home meet by becoming the first diver in Notre Dame history to crack the 400-point plateau in the 3-meter event. Lex’s score of 405.15 off the high board gave him a first-place finish and the school record.
