Fighting Irish Men And Women Both Lead Heading Into Final Day Of BIG EAST Meet

Feb. 17, 2006

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will enter the final day of competition at the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships in first place. The Irish men have a comfortable 127.5-point lead over Pittsburgh (511-383.5) and the rest of the 11-team field, while the Irish women hold a narrow five-point edge over Rutgers (496.5-491.5) in their field. The men are trying to claim back-to-back titles after winning the program’s first-ever BIG EAST championship last season and the women are in search of their 10th straight conference title. The meet’s final two sessions will take place on Saturday in the Nassau County Aquatic Center.

The Notre Dame women entered the night trailing Rutgers by six points, yet a strong performance that featured a win by Katie Carroll in the 400-IM and several all-BIG EAST performances put them in the lead. Carroll defended her 400-IM title in a time of 4:14.37. She is now an 11-time BIG EAST champion, which ranks her in a tie with Elizabeth Barger (class of 2000) for third all-time in program history.

Freshman Christa Riggins came through with a strong showing in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.12) to take second overall and earn all-BIG EAST honors. Notre Dame also locked up key points in the diving competition as Lucy Hirt and Tara Hyer placed second and third, respectively.

Senior co-captain Jamie Lutkus made it a sweep for the Irish in the 400-IM as he took the men’s competition in a school-record and NCAA `B’ cut time of 3:52.07. Lutkus reclaimed the title after winning it as a sophomore in 2004 and placing third one year ago.

Fellow senior Tim Randolph bested his own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke for the second time on the day as he swam 54.47 to place third overall. He was one of five Irish men to earn all-BIG EAST honors on the night.
