Fighting Irish Legend Paul Hornung Added To Notre Dame Football Fantasy Camp Roster

Feb. 23, 2011

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fighting Irish football legend Paul Hornung will return to the Notre Dame campus this summer as he will be a featured guest for one day at the 2011 Notre Dame Football Fantasy Camp.

Hornung will speak to the campers as well as be around for an entire day interacting with this year’s group including signing autographs and snapping photos with camp participants. Other Notre Dame legends already announced to attend include Joe Theismann and Jerome Bettis.

The Notre Dame Football Fantasy Camp will be directed by Irish head coach Brian Kelly, as well as his entire Notre Dame coaching staff, current Irish players and plenty of other former Notre Dame legends. They will provide daily hands-on instruction and interaction. They also will share priceless personal experiences from their time under the Golden Dome and in the NFL.

Camp dates are Tuesday, May 31, through Saturday, June 4, 2011. Participants will stay at the Fairfield Inn & Suites located across the street from campus and adjacent to the new Eddy Street Commons, and mere steps from the shadow of Notre Dame Stadium.

In order to maximize the experience of each participant, there is a limited number of spaces available for the 2011 Notre Dame Fantasy Football Camp and the camp is expected to sell out in the near future.

An outstanding all-around athlete who played quarterback, left halfback, fullback and safety, Hornung remains the only player from a losing team (Notre Dame finished 2-8 in ’56) ever to win the Heisman Trophy.

As a sophomore, Hornung served as the backup fullback and also averaged 6.1 points per contest while earning a basketball monogram. As a junior, he finished fourth nationally in total offense with 1,215 yards and fifth in the Heisman voting behind Ohio State’s Hopalong Cassady. Hornung ran for one score, threw for another and intercepted two passes in a victory over fourth-ranked Navy and then brought the Irish from behind against Iowa with a TD pass and game-winning field goal in the final minutes. In a loss to USC, he threw and ran for 354 yards, an NCAA high that year.

As a senior, he ranked second nationally in total offense (1,337 yards), accounted for more than half the Irish scoring-and converted 67 times on either third or fourth down as a junior and senior combined.

A bonus pick of the Green Bay Packers, he led the NFL in scoring in 1959, ’60, and ’61. He retired after the ’66 season, as physical problems kept him from joining New Orleans as an expansion pick.

Hornung joined the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame in 1985, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

The Notre Dame Football Fantasy Camp allows fans to develop a personal and active association with all of the Irish football facilities – including Notre Dame Stadium, Guglielmino Athletics Complex, Isban Auditorium, Haggar Varsity Fitness Center, Morse Recruiting Lounge, LaBar Practice Complex, Monogram Room, Naimoli Family Club Room in Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center, Schivarelli Alumni Players’ Lounge, Basilica of the Sacred Heart and many other notable facilities around the historic campus.

Fans will become a Notre Dame football player. They will go through all the practices, training tables and meetings during the week. On Blue/Gold game day, they will dress in the Notre Dame Stadium locker room donning authentic ND gear head to toe – from the famous gold helmets to adidas cleats. After mass and the traditional pre-game speech, participants will slap the “Play Like A Champion” sign and sprint out of the tunnel onto the field at Notre Dame Stadium in front of family, friends and fans.

Campers will be provided with all practice and game apparel, as well as other Notre Dame memorabilia and gifts, including a team photo and keepsake DVD from the Blue-Gold Fantasy Football Game to relive the memories.

Cost for this year’s camp is $4,495. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Notre Dame Monogram Club. The Notre Dame Monogram Club provides support to current student-athletes and engages both former and current student-athletes in service, scholarship, support, recognition and fellowship and to maintain the rich tradition and legacy of Notre Dame Athletics.
