iOWA CITY, Iowa – The Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team capped off a successful weekend with a second-place finish Sunday at Iowa’s Hawkeye Invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Only the host Hawkeyes (1,177.5) placed higher than the Irish (822) in the seven-team field, and senior Michael Sullivan and freshman Frank Dyer again led the way for the team by garnering a pair of fourth-place finishes.

Sullivan posted a swift time in the 200 backstroke (1:48.66) en route to his fourth-place finish, and Dyer hit the wall in 45.08 in the 100 freestyle to add more fourth-place points for the Irish.

The 400 freestyle relay squad of Dyer, Marshall Sherman, John McGinley and Thomas Van Volkenburg completed the trifecta of fourth-place finishes for the Irish, hitting the wall in 3:01.72.

The meet concluded the 2010 portion of the Irish schedule. The team will return to dual-meet action Jan. 11 at Northwestern.

1,650 Freestyle: Steven Brus touched in at eight place in 16:11.67 as the highest finishing Irish swimmer … Ryan Belecanech hit the wall in 16:21.29 for 10th.

200 Backstroke: Sullivan sliced through the water to nab fourth in 1:48.66 … Jonathon Whitcomb (7th – 1:50.35) and Sherman (8th – 1:51.19) also placed for the Irish.

100 Freestyle: Dyer capped off an impressive weekend with his fourth-place showing in 45.08 … Joshua Nosal (46.36), Van Volkenburg (46.60) and Kevin Overholt (46.87) also swam for the Irish.

200 Breaststroke: Joshua Choi was the highest finishing Irish swimmer, notching sixth place in 2:04.58 … Joseph Raycroft won the B-final in 2:04.08.

200 Butterfly: Wesley Mullins was the sole Irish representative in the A-final, placing fifth in 1:50.54 … Peter Koppel took the win in the B-final in 1:51.61.

400 Freestyle Relay: The quartet of Dyer, Sherman, McGinley and Van Volkenburg posted a 3:01.72 to snare fourth for the Irish … the squad of Kevin Rahill, William Roth, Christopher Johnson and Colin Babcock took seventh in 3:06.78
