Jan. 14, 2010

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team will take a double-dip this weekend by hosting Michigan State (Jan. 15) and BIG EAST rival Louisville (Jan. 16) at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The battle against the Spartans starts at 5:00 p.m. (ET) while competition against the Cardinals starts at 1:30 p.m. Live stats will be available for both meets UND.com, and the Louisville meet will feature live streaming video.

The Irish are 4-2 on the season with one BIG EAST win against Pittsburgh. In their last dual meet Notre Dame fell to visiting Northwestern, 158.5-139.5, on Jan. 9.

Louisville is ranked 16th in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association Top 25 poll, while the Irish received nine votes.

“These are two very big meets for us this weekend,” Irish head coach Tim Welsh said. “This closes out our dual meet season, and by swimming back-to-back on consecutive days, we’re inching closer in our preparations for the Shamrock Invitational and BIG EAST Championships. Both of the visiting teams are very competitive so we’ll want to be at our best. This is a toughness test for us. We want to see how well we have recovered from our training trip. Our team showed positive signs last week against Northwestern, but of course we’d like to swim faster against Michigan State and Louisville.”

Bill Bass (50.44) posted the team’s second-fastest time of the season in the 100 fly against the Wildcats, while Steven Brus accomplished the same feat in the 1,000 free (9:42.71).
