Fighting Irish Compete In Saint Andrews Collegiate Invitational

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Notre Dame men’s swimming team competed in the Second Annual Saint Andrews Collegiate Invitational Swim Meet at Saint Andrews School in Boca Raton, Fla. on Sunday, Dec. 31. Teams from Notre Dame, North Carolina State, University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), Catholic University and Illinois (women) participated in the event. All of the races in the meet were contested over non-standard collegiate distances and the meet was not scored.

Highlights for Notre Dame included a 1-2-3 sweep in both the 150-yard and 75-yard butterfly events. Freshman Ross Moore (Champaign, Ill./Champaign Central) led the sweep in the 150 fly with his time of 1:22.31. Senior Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western) (1:22.94) and freshman MacKenzie LeBlanc (Plano, Texas/Plano East) (1:24.2) finished second and third in the event, respectively.

Senior co-captain Tim Kegelman (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), Notre Dame’s only triple winner in the meet, led the way in the 75-yard butterfly with his time of 36.42. Freshman Ray Toomey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) (37.31) and Moore (37.55) completed the sweep with second and third place finishes, respectively. Kegelman also won the 100-yard IM (54.03) and swam the anchor leg on the winning 300-yard freestyle relay (2:16.8).

Notre Dame’s other sweep of the afternoon came in the 150-yard freestyle with Brown, a co-captain, leading the way at 1:13.6. Fellow senior Brian Freeman (Sanger, Calif./Immanuel) added the second place result at 1:15.80, just ahead of sophomore Danny Lutkus’ (Granger, Ind./Penn) third-place finish at 1:15.8.

Notre Dame’s next competition will be a relay meet on Jan. 6th, also at Saint Andrews School. Notre Dame’s divers begin their holiday action on Jan. 2nd in Fort Lauderdale.
