Fighting Irish Add B-Cuts and Break School Record in Day 2 of ACC Championships

ATLANTA – Notre Dame had another day of accomplishments in its resurgent 2016-17 campaign on day two of the 2017 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta. The Fighting Irish are in ninth place with 218 points.

STANDOUT SWIMS

200 Free Relay

The Irish relays were at it again breaking yet another school record to add to the two broken on Monday. The Notre Dame foursome of Nicole Smith, Catherine Mulquin, Abbie Dolan and Sofia Revilak set the school record for the event for the second time this season clocking in at 1:29.47. The time was good enough for an NCAA B-Cut and gave the team points placing seventh in the event.

Women’s 500 Freestyle

In the first freestyle event of the championships, the Fighting Irish had multiple swimmers in the finals who put forth their best efforts of the season. Molly Treble placed 13th in the event with a time of 4:47.55. It was her best time of the season and good enough for the first NCAA B-Cut time for Notre Dame in the 500 freestyle in the 2016-17 season. Teammate Reilly Lanigan swam her best time of the season tapping the board in 4:48.72 in the morning prelims.

50 Freestyle

Catherine Mulquin built on a great day by clocking B-Cut times in the event. Her prelim time of 22.40 was good for a B-Cut, and an evening swim of 22.35 was her best of the season. Teammate Katie Smith also tapped in with B-Cut times, coming in at 22.42 in morning prelims and at 22:57 in the evening finals. Smith’s times were her best of the season.

200 IM

Nicole Smith’s time of 1:59.93 was her best of the campaign and was good for an NCAA B-Cut time. She ended the day 16th in the event. Teammate Erin Sheehan’s time of 2:00.88 in the preliminaries was also good for an NCAA B-Cut time in the race. Katie Miller’s time of 2:01.29 gave the Irish a third B-Cut in the event.

On his team’s second day at the tournament…
“Another great set of performances for our team today. We had many lifetime best swims and our team upped their game at the finals. Molly Treble and Alice Treuth in the 500 Free, Catherine Mulquin in the 50 free and our 200 free relay set the Notre Dame record and that was fantastic.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s races …

“Tomorrow is the day where our whole team engages in primary events and I am looking forward to that.”

DAY 2 NOTES

  • Rebecca Walton earned her best time in the 500 free, coming in at 4:57.29.
  • Alice Treuth clocked her best time in the 500, coming in at 4:48.53.
  • Sherri McIntee posted a personal-best time of 2:04.72 in the 200 IM.
  • Alyssa Storino raced her best time in the 200 IM, tapping the board at 2:04.11.
  • Sofia Revilak swam her best time in the 50 free, clocking in at 23.04.
  • Lauren Heller registered her best time of the season in the 50 free, tapping in at 23.13.
