NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Four University of Notre Dame women’s tennis student-athletes wrapped their weekend play at the ITA Summer Circuit regional on Tuesday, with a doubles pair competing for a title in the event held at the Courtney Tennis Center on campus.
Julie Vrabel and Jane Fennelly posted an impressive run through the tournament to make the championship match. After a first-round bye, the pair made quick work of Hope’s Catherine Wingrove and high school partner Madeline Miller (8-1), Indiana’s Sarah Baron and high school partner Sydney Myong (8-3), and Western Michigan’s Denise Azcui and Tracy Kuhle (8-4) before making the semifinal. Vrabel and Fennelly made the final in a walkover win over Northwestern’s Alexandra Chatt and Madeline Lipp.
Michigan’s Brienne Minor and William & Mary’s Lauren Goodman teamed up on the other side of the doubles bracket in the open competition. The two faced off in the finals of the singles tournament and their combination was too much for Vrabel and Fennelly, and the Irish tandem fell 8-4.
Fennelly also made a nice run through the singles draw, advancing to the round of 16 before running into eventual champion Goodman 6-3, 6-1. Fennelly kicked things off with a 6-0, 6-1 win over high schooler Silvia Verebes, then claimed wins over Eastern Illinois’ Kelly Iden (7-6, 6-2), Myong (7-6, 6-4) and Michigan State’s Lexi Baylis (6-3, 2-6, 10-6).
The next event on the summer slate is the USTA/ITA National Summer Championships, held at Indiana University from August 8-11.
