NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams turned in perfect Saturdays during the first day of competition at the DeCicco Duals, held at the Castellan Family Fencing Center.
Both top-ranked Irish teams swept the day, with the men earning victories over Lawrence, Northwestern, Detroit Mercy, Wayne State and Florida, while the women defeated Lawrence, Wagner, Detroit Mercy, Wayne State and Florida.
The Irish men had five fencers record at least eight wins, with freshman sabreur Guram Lortkipanidze going 8-0 and senior epeeist, senior foilist Blake Murphy, freshman foilist Gustavo Rossello and junior foilist Alexander Ju going 8-1. Freshman foilist Andrew Machovec went 6-0, while freshman epeeist Michael Siroky posted a 6-1 mark.
The women had five reach double-digit wins, led by sophomore foilist Beatrice Verrecchia’s 15-0 record. Junior sabreuse Natalie Disher went 14-0 while squadmate Regina O’Brien was 11-0, and freshman epeeist Miriam Grady turned in a 12-0 mark. Sophomore foilist Erica Tsai went 14-1 and junior sabreuse Christinia Boitano boasted a 13-1 day.
The Irish will return to the piste at 8 a.m. ET Sunday to wrap up the invitational, competing against a bevy of club programs.
