NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame men’s lacrosse senior defender Garrett Epple has been named the ACC co-Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after he helped lock down No. 1 Maryland’s offense in the 5-4 win on Saturday at Arlotta Stadium.

The award marks the second career ACC Defensive Player of the Week honor for Epple, who was pegged by Inside Lacrosse as a Preseason First Team All-American. Epple also garnered Preseason All-ACC accolades in 2017 and was an honorable mention All-American after his sophomore season.

Epple led the Notre Dame defense to one of the most impressive performances of the season in Saturday’s victory over Maryland, as the Irish held the Terrapins to just four goals. The senior disrupted the Maryland attack all game, as he tied his career high in caused turnovers with four and also led the Irish in ground balls with six.

The four goals are the fewest Maryland has scored all season with its previous season low being 10 goals in a game. The four goals are the lowest total Notre Dame has allowed this season and the fewest since defeating Maryland last season by a score of 9-4 on March 5, 2016 in Costa Mesa, California. The Notre Dame defense is tied for first in the ACC in goals allowed per game, giving up an average of just 6.33 over the course of three games.

Epple currently leads the ACC and ranks third in the nation in turnovers caused per game with an average of 2.67.

The Irish travel west for another marquee matchup. Notre Dame squares off with Denver at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 12 in Denver. The game will be broadcast on Altitude TV.
