NOTRE DAME, Ind. – No. 4/4 Notre Dame men’s lacrosse senior defender Garrett Epple has been named co-ACC Defensive Player of the week for his effort in the team’s 16-5 win over Michigan in Sunday’s home opener at Arlotta Stadium.

Monday marks the first ACC Defensive Player of the Week award for Epple, who was pegged by Inside Lacrosse as a Preseason First Team All-American. Epple also garnered Preseason All-ACC accolades in 2017 and was an honorable mention All-American after his sophomore season.

Epple played a major role in the Irish defense, as the senior tied for the team lead in caused turnovers with two in the win over Michigan. Epple and the Notre Dame defense did not allow a goal in the final 28:50 of the game, allowing the Irish offense to score nine consecutive goals to close the game and seal the 16-5 victory. The senior also scooped up two ground balls in the win.

The Irish allowed Michigan to take just 21 total shots in the game, allowing no more than six shots in a quarter. The Notre Dame defense is tied for first in the ACC in goals allowed per game, giving up an average of just 7.5 over the course of two games.

The Irish are back in action on Saturday, March 4 at Noon, as they welcome No. 2/1 Maryland to Arlotta Stadium for a top-five showdown. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
