Emily Loomis, Lauren Kelbley Named to Four Points Sheraton Classic All-Tournament Team

MALIBU, Calif. – Junior OPP/OH Emily Loomis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers H.S.) and sophomore MB Lauren Kelbley (Bascom, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon H.S.) were named to the Four Points Sheraton Classic all-tournament team, it was announced Monday. The Irish players helped the Notre Dame volleyball team to a 2-1 record in the weekend event, including an upset of 10th-ranked Arizona in Friday’s season opener.

Loomis, who also was named the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week, led the Irish with 42 kills on a .365 hitting percentage. She also was in on a team-high 14 blocks, including four solos, and notched three digs. Against Arizona, Loomis had 14 kills and only two errors for a .522 hitting percentage. In the Eastern Washington match, she hit .412, registering 18 kills. Overall, Loomis delivered 51 points for the Irish. Dating back to 2002, she has slammed 10 or more kills in nine consecutive matches.

Kelbley had 39 kills on .360 hitting in the tournament, highlighted by a team-high 16 kills on a .424 attack percentage in the Arizona match. She also had 12 blocks, including six against the Wildcats. In addition, Kelbley registered four aces and five digs and was responsible for 49.5 points. Dating back to last season, she has notched 10+ kills in 10 straight matches.

Arizona’s Kim Glass was named tournament MVP, while Wildcat Bre Ladd, Pepperdine’s Katie Wilkins and Melissa Mehlhorn, and Courtney Bush of Eastern Washington joined Loomis and Kelbley on the all-tournament team.

The Irish return to action this weekend in the Longhorn Classic in Austin, Texas, taking on Houston Friday at 5 p.m. (CDT) and host #23 Texas on Saturday at 7 p.m. (CDT). Notre Dame then begins a stretch of seven consecutive home matches next Tuesday, Sept. 9, against Valparaiso at 7 p.m. (EST).
